PV Powered Selected By US Department of Energy for SEGIS Award
PV Powered-led team to receive up to $5M in funding over the three-stage program

Bend, OR - September 29, 2008

PV Powered, Inc. announced today that it has been selected by the US Department of Energy (DOE) and contract manager, Sandia National Laboratories, for an award under the Solar Energy Grid Integration System (SEGIS) program. SEGIS is a $24 million effort to develop advanced inverters and balance-of-system components that aim to reduce the lifetime cost of solar electricity while enabling increased grid penetration and greater overall PV system reliability. It is part of the U.S. DOE Solar America Initiative (SAI) program which has the objective of accelerating the development of advanced solar electric technologies that enable PV (photovoltaics) to be cost-competitive with other forms of electricity by 2015.

The PV Powered-led team could receive up to $5 million over the three stages of the competitive program. The other two members of the team are Portland General Electric (PGE) and Northern Plains Power Technologies (NPPT). Portland, Oregon-based PGE is a recognized leader in the integration of distributed resources onto their utility grid. The innovative utility is also a leader in the deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) which will enable next generation two-way relationships with PGE's customer loads and distributed energy resources. NPPT is a PV-focused consulting firm based in Brookings, SD, that specializes in maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and advanced anti-islanding technologies.

Over the course of the program, the PV Powered-led team will develop several innovations that increase energy harvest, reduce the cost of PV systems and remove barriers to increased grid penetration. Key aspects include specialized MPPT algorithms, tighter integration with electric utility and commercial facility monitoring and control systems, as well as development of low cost balance-of-system components that will enable increased energy production.

"PV Powered is honored to be selected by Sandia and the US DOE for this highly competitive program," said Gregg Patterson, PV Powered chief executive officer. "The SEGIS program is a perfect complement to the industry-leading inverter reliability work we pioneered with Boeing as part of an earlier SAI program. We are also pleased to team with Portland General Electric and NPPT who are each recognized leaders in their fields."

"Portland General Electric is excited to be part of the PV Powered SEGIS team," said Mark Osborn, PGE distributed resources manager. "We are committed to making distributed resources, including solar, a critical part of our growth strategy over the next several decades."
