Oregon has always supported its pioneers. From Lewis and Clark's famous journey 200 years ago, to Governor Tom McCall's groundbreaking Beach Bill in the 1960's - we are a state with a long history of entrepreneurship and innovation.

It is fitting that solar energy was pioneered in Oregon. Fifty years ago, two Oregon scientists, Daryl Chapin and Gerald Pearson, found a way to turn sunlight into electricity. These two Willamette University graduates joined Calvin Fuller in this great discovery for Bell Labs.

In just the last year, we have seen a number of solar milestones. Portland hosted the National Solar Energy Conference. Oregon is now home to the Northwest's largest industrial solar electric installation at Kettle Food's Salem facility. The nation's second photovoltaic installation on a commercial grocery store sits atop Ray's Food Place in Bend.

I believe Oregon can become the national leader in renewable energy and renewable product manufacturing, which will stimulate our economy, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and protect Oregon's environment for the future. Already, PV Powered, one of the emerging leaders in the manufacture of photovoltaic inverters, is located in Oregon. I am also working hard to locate one of the leading photovoltaic panel manufacturers in Oregon.

Oregon universities are playing a leading role on solar energy development as well. For instance, Oregon's Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls plans to build a new student dormitory powered exclusively by renewable energy, including solar energy - first of its kind in the nation. It also is developing new technologies to assess the installed efficiency of photovoltaic systems and plans to offer the nation's first Bachelor of Science degree in renewable energy systems.

To some people's surprise, Oregon has excellent natural solar resources. The sun shines in eastern and southern Oregon on a comparable basis to that of Arizona and Florida. Even the Willamette Valley receives as much solar energy annually as the U.S. average.

So this October, as we celebrate Energy Awareness Month, let's remember Oregon's role in creating a renewable and sunny future.
